The photo collection ‘Toilet’ by the five-member group “Geribara 5” (comprising Nobuyoshi Araki and others). Araki’s official website states: ‘In 1970, he formed the “Geribara Three Musketeers” (a triple meaning of “guerrilla,” “Che Guevara,” and ‘diarrhea’) with Kojiro Yaebata and Fukio Ikeda. Later, Yoshio Takase and Naohisa Tamojo joined to form the “Reproduction Group Geribara 5.” This group reaffirmed the principle that ‘photography is reproduction.’” As Geribara 5, they produced three books, including this one (Young Ladies in Bathing Suits ‘Five Girls’). ‘Reproduction’ signifies capturing the form of the subject existing as an expression, suggesting the relationship between photographer and subject characteristic of Araki. Published around the same time as Araki’s masterpiece Sentimental Journey, this book is the first in the Guerrilla 5 series.
