In her long-term project “Reversed Portrait,” Corina Gertz delves into the specific ethnographic attire of many countries around the world as an attribute of individuality dictated by the place. The photograph depicts women from behind against a black monochrome background, wearing traditional clothing or costumes, rethinking the canon of the photographic portrait. This repetitive composition eliminates body proportions or skin color, and emphasizes clothing and attributes as an essential cultural constant. Traditional attire expresses not so much individuality as belonging.
